Standsicherheit, or stability, refers to the ability of a structure or object to remain in static equilibrium and resist tipping, sliding, or overturning under applied loads and environmental actions. It encompasses static stability, such as weight distribution and anchorage, as well as dynamic stability, including wind, vibrations, and other time-varying effects. A proper assessment ensures safety for occupants, users, and bystanders.

The concept is applied across civil engineering, construction, event technology, and portable equipment. Typical factors include geometry (base area, height, center of gravity), mass and load distribution, foundation or mounting conditions, friction and soil properties, anchorage details, and connections. External actions consist of dead loads, live loads, wind loads, snow, seismic effects, and accidental impacts. A risk-based approach checks whether design actions do not exceed the structure’s resisting capacity, often via a limit state method that compares forces and moments against a factor of safety.

Assessment and verification are usually performed by licensed engineers using guidelines and standards. In many jurisdictions, the process yields a stability report or Standsicherheitsnachweis. Methods range from hand calculations of overturning and sliding to numerical simulations or full-scale tests. Mitigation measures include increasing base width, adding ballast, anchoring structures, guy wires, cross-bracing, or redesigning geometry.

Applications include tall installations, cranes, scaffolding, signage, and exhibition or event stands where temporary or mobile structures must withstand environmental actions and user interaction. The term highlights the essential requirement that a stand or structure remains upright, stable, and safe during its intended use.
