Standbyenergia, commonly known as standby power, refers to the electrical energy drawn by electronic devices when they are plugged in but not performing their primary function. Devices in standby may be turned off but still respond to remote controls, clocks, or scheduled updates. The term is used in energy-efficiency discussions to capture energy waste occurring in idle mode.

Typical sources include televisions, set-top boxes, gaming consoles, computers, chargers, kitchen appliances with digital displays, and networking equipment. These devices maintain essential circuits for wake-up signals, status indicators, or wireless connectivity, which keeps them consuming power even when not actively used.

The magnitude of standby energy varies by device and region. On a per-device basis it is usually 0.5 to 10 watts; cumulatively, a household can discharge a noticeable amount of energy through many devices, representing a portion of annual electricity use and contributing to ongoing energy costs.

Policy efforts and standards aim to curb standby consumption. In many jurisdictions, standards restrict standby power for specified product categories; programs such as Energy Star in the United States and ecodesign requirements in the European Union set limits and labeling. External power supplies are also targeted by efficiency directives.

Reducing standby energy involves practical steps: unplug seldom-used equipment, use smart power strips, enable automatic power-down features, replace older devices with energy-efficient models, and educate consumers about the difference between off and standby. These measures, along with continued design improvements, can lower household electricity use.
