Standbeens

Standbeens is a term used in veterinary medicine, particularly in equine contexts, to describe a condition where a horse stands with its weight unnaturally shifted onto one or more legs. This altered posture is often a sign of discomfort, pain, or lameness in the affected limb. Horses are prey animals, and as such, they instinctively try to hide any signs of weakness or injury. Therefore, a noticeable change in how a horse bears weight can indicate a significant underlying issue.

The reasons for a horse adopting a standbeen posture can be varied. It could stem from acute injuries such as sprains, strains, fractures, or hoof abscesses. Chronic conditions like arthritis or navicular disease can also lead to prolonged weight-shifting. Even minor irritations, such as a poorly fitting shoe or a stone lodged in the hoof, might cause a horse to favor one leg. Observing a horse consistently standing with a distinct shift in weight is a cue for careful examination by a veterinarian to diagnose and treat the cause.
