Standardstift

A standardstift is a standardized cylindrical pin used in mechanical engineering as a locating, aligning, or joining element in assemblies. It serves to position parts relative to each other, align holes, or secure components that may need disassembly. Common forms include dowel pins for precise location, straight pins for quick alignment, and spring pins or roll pins for captive retention.

Standardstifte are typically made from steel, including alloy and stainless grades, and are often hardened or surface-treated for wear resistance. They come in a range of diameters and lengths, with tolerances defined by national or international standards (for example DIN or ISO). The choice of fit—interference for fixed positioning or clearance/transition for easier assembly—affects performance and repeatability.

Installation and fit require attention to hole quality and alignment. Dowel pins are usually press-fitted into a drilled hole in one part and locate against a corresponding hole in the mating part. Spring pins are driven into a hole and expand to secure without predrilling, while roll pins function similarly by deforming to grip the hole. Accurate hole sizing and perpendicularity are essential for repeatable positioning.

Standards and usage: standardstifte are governed by dimensional tolerances, materials, and finishes specified in DIN, ISO, and other standards. They are widely used in jigs, fixtures, machine tools, and assemblies where repeatable, precise positioning is required.
