Standardipakka

Standardipakka is a term used in software packaging to denote a compact, interoperable container format for modular software components intended for cross-platform deployment. It standardizes package layout, metadata, and dependency specification to simplify distribution, versioning, and runtime assembly.

A standardipakka package includes a metadata manifest, a compressed payload of files, and a digital signature. The manifest identifies the package, the supported platforms, required dependencies, and checksums. Implementations aim for a lightweight footprint and fast extraction, suitable for embedded devices and desktop environments.

Origin and status: The term emerged in practitioner and academic discussions in the 2010s as part of modular packaging debates. It is not recognized as a formal standard by major organizations, and there is no single governing body. As a result, various ecosystems have developed variant formats that reference standardipakka concepts without full interoperability.

Usage: In practice, standardipakka is used in plugin systems, lightweight services, and open-source projects seeking a middle ground between installers and containers. Some projects implement their own metadata schemas and signatures while preserving core ideas of compactness and modularity.

Relation to other packaging systems: It is discussed alongside AppImage, Flatpak, and Snap. Unlike full container solutions, standardipakka focuses on modular assembly and dependency graphs rather than strict process isolation.
