Stahlfasern

Stahlfasern, also known as steel fibers, are short, discrete lengths of steel used as reinforcement in concrete and other cementitious materials. They are typically manufactured by cutting wire or by melt-spinning processes. The primary purpose of incorporating steel fibers into concrete is to enhance its mechanical properties, particularly tensile strength, flexural strength, impact resistance, and toughness. This is achieved by the fibers bridging cracks that form within the concrete matrix.

The properties of steel fibers, such as their aspect ratio (length to diameter), shape, and surface texture, significantly influence their performance. Higher aspect ratios generally lead to better mechanical enhancement, but can also make mixing more difficult. Fibers can be straight, hooked, or crimped to improve mechanical anchorage within the concrete. Surface treatments are sometimes applied to enhance bond with the cementitious paste.

Steel fiber reinforced concrete (SFRC) finds application in various construction scenarios where enhanced durability and performance are required. These include industrial floors, pavements, tunnel linings, precast elements, and structures subjected to dynamic loads or seismic activity. The use of steel fibers can reduce the need for traditional steel reinforcement like rebar in certain applications, potentially leading to faster construction and cost savings. However, careful consideration of mix design, fiber dosage, and placement techniques is crucial for optimal performance of SFRC.
