Stabilityoften is a quantitative metric used in systems theory to describe how frequently a dynamic system remains within a predefined stable region under stochastic disturbances. It is defined as the long-run proportion of time the system's state satisfies stability criteria, or equivalently, the probability that the system remains stable over time under a given disturbance distribution.

Origin and terminology: The term stabilityoften originated in the literature on robust control and resilience analysis in the early 2020s, where researchers sought a compact scalar measure combining probabilistic and dynamical notions of stability. It is not tied to a single formal definition and can be adapted to different stability notions, such as Lyapunov stability, input-output stability, or boundedness.

Calculation and estimation: In practice, stabilityoften is estimated via Monte Carlo simulations or sample-based analysis. One can simulate many disturbance trajectories and compute the fraction of time the state remains within a stability set. Alternatively, for linear stochastic systems, eigenvalue spectra and Lyapunov exponents can be used to bound or approximate stabilityoften under specified disturbance models.

Applications: The metric is used to compare designs and controllers in engineering fields such as robotics, aerospace, and power systems, as well as in software reliability, ecological management, and economic modeling, where systems must operate reliably under uncertain conditions.
