Stabiliseringskretser, also known as stabilizer circuits or voltage regulators, are electronic circuits designed to maintain a constant output voltage despite variations in the input voltage or load current. These circuits are crucial in many electronic devices to ensure reliable operation and protect sensitive components from voltage fluctuations.

There are several types of stabiliser circuits, broadly categorized into linear and switching regulators. Linear regulators are simpler in design and introduce less electrical noise but are less efficient, especially when there is a large difference between input and output voltages. They work by dissipating excess voltage as heat. Common examples include Zener diode regulators and three-terminal IC regulators like the 78xx series.

Switching regulators, on the other hand, are more complex but significantly more efficient. They operate by rapidly switching a power element (like a transistor) on and off, storing energy in an inductor or capacitor and releasing it at the desired voltage level. This on/off operation, often at high frequencies, minimizes power dissipation as heat. Types of switching regulators include buck (step-down), boost (step-up), and buck-boost converters.

The primary function of a stabiliser circuit is to provide a stable and predictable voltage supply. This is essential for microcontrollers, operational amplifiers, digital logic circuits, and many other components that are sensitive to voltage changes. Without proper voltage stabilization, these components could malfunction, operate erratically, or even be permanently damaged. The choice of stabiliser circuit depends on factors such as efficiency requirements, cost, size constraints, and the acceptable level of noise.
