Støttemuskulaturen, often translated as supporting musculature or stabilizer muscles, refers to a group of muscles that work to maintain posture and stabilize joints. Unlike the prime movers that initiate movement, these muscles provide a stable base for more dynamic muscle actions. They are crucial for everyday activities, from sitting and standing to more complex movements like lifting and running.

These muscles often operate at a lower intensity for longer durations, acting antagonistically to prime movers or working isometrically to hold a position. Examples include the deep abdominal muscles and pelvic floor muscles, which stabilize the trunk, and the rotator cuff muscles, which stabilize the shoulder joint.
