Stålplattor

Stålplattor are flat, rectangular plates of steel produced by hot-rolling or cold-rolling processes. They are among the most common steel products used as structural members, base plates, machine components, and in shipbuilding and construction. Plates range in thickness from a few millimeters to hundreds of millimeters and are produced in standard widths and lengths, often sold cut to size.

Two main production routes are used: hot-rolled plates, made above the recrystallization temperature, which are generally looser tolerances and a rough surface; and cold-rolled plates, further processed to tighter tolerances and better surface finish.

Materials and grades vary. Carbon steel plates include common structural grades such as A36 (or EN S235/JR in Europe); higher-strength low-alloy plates exist for demanding structural applications. Stainless steel plates, typically 304 or 316, offer corrosion resistance. Alloy steel plates bring additional properties such as higher hardness or wear resistance.

Surface finishes and treatments vary: mill finish, brushed or polished finishes, pickled and passivated for stainless steel, shot blasting, or coating with paints, epoxy, or galvanizing. Plasma or flame-cut edges are common for fabrication; plates may be drilled, milled, or machined.

Standards regulate dimensions, tolerances, and mechanical properties, with references such as ASTM A6/A6M for general requirements, ASTM A36, EN 10025 for European structural steel, and ASTM A480 for surface finish. Quality assurance includes thickness checks, hardness testing, and non-destructive testing where required.

Uses include structural components for buildings and bridges, base plates for machinery, heavy equipment housings, pressure vessels, and shipbuilding. Plates are also used for wear-resistant applications when paired with hardfacing alloys.
