The Srebrenica massacre, also known as the Srebrenica genocide, was the systematic mass murder of approximately 8,000 Bosniak Muslim men and boys in and around the town of Srebrenica during the Bosnian War. The killings occurred in July 1995. Srebrenica, a town in eastern Bosnia and Herzegovina, had been declared a UN-protected "safe area" and was defended by a small contingent of Dutch UN peacekeepers.
