Sravanabelagola

Sravanabelagola is a Jain pilgrimage town located near Hassan district in Karnataka, India. It is famous for its 57-foot tall statue of Lord Bahubali, known as Gomateshwara. This colossal statue is carved from a single granite boulder and is one of the largest monolithic statues in the world. The town is situated on the Vindhyagiri Hill, which is one of two hills in the area, the other being Chandragiri.

The Gomateshwara statue is a major pilgrimage site for Jains, and the Mahamastakabhisheka, a grand consecration ceremony, is performed every twelve years. During this ceremony, the statue is bathed in various auspicious liquids like milk, ghee, and saffron. The town's history dates back to at least the 3rd century BCE, and it has been a significant center of Jainism for centuries. Chandragiri hill is dotted with numerous Jain temples and caves, many of which contain inscriptions detailing the lives and donations of Jain scholars and rulers.

Sravanabelagola is accessible by road and is a popular destination for both religious pilgrims and tourists interested in history and architecture. The journey to the top of Vindhyagiri Hill involves climbing approximately 600 steps carved into the rock. The views from the top are panoramic, offering a scenic vista of the surrounding countryside. The town itself is relatively small and retains a tranquil atmosphere, contributing to its spiritual significance.
