Spændingscykler

Spændingscykler, or stress cycles, refer to the repeated application and removal of stress on a material. This phenomenon is a fundamental concept in materials science and engineering, particularly relevant to fatigue analysis. When a material is subjected to a stress cycle, it undergoes deformation. If these cycles are repeated, especially at high stress levels, it can lead to microscopic cracks forming and propagating within the material. Over time, these cracks can grow until the material can no longer withstand the applied load, resulting in failure. This type of failure, known as fatigue failure, is often sudden and occurs at stress levels significantly below the material's ultimate tensile strength.

The characteristics of a stress cycle are defined by several parameters. The maximum stress and minimum stress experienced during a cycle are crucial. The stress range, which is the difference between the maximum and minimum stress, is also a key factor. Furthermore, the mean stress, the average of the maximum and minimum stress, influences the fatigue life. The frequency of the cycles, or how quickly they are applied, can also play a role, though its effect is often secondary to the stress amplitude. Understanding these parameters allows engineers to predict the fatigue life of components and design structures that can withstand anticipated stress cycles throughout their operational lifespan.
