Språkforskning, also known as linguistics, is the scientific study of language. It encompasses a wide range of topics related to the structure, function, and evolution of human language. Linguists investigate how languages are formed, how they are used in communication, and how they change over time.

The field of språkforskning can be broadly divided into several sub-disciplines. Phonetics and phonology study the sounds of language, including their production and perception, and how sounds are organized into systems. Morphology and syntax examine the structure of words and sentences, respectively, looking at how words are formed and how they combine to create meaningful phrases and clauses. Semantics and pragmatics deal with meaning, with semantics focusing on the literal meaning of words and sentences, and pragmatics exploring how context influences interpretation and how language is used in social situations.

Historical linguistics traces the development of languages over time, investigating language families, sound changes, and the reconstruction of proto-languages. Sociolinguistics explores the relationship between language and society, examining dialectal variations, language attitudes, and the social factors that influence language use. Psycholinguistics investigates the cognitive processes involved in language acquisition, comprehension, and production. Computational linguistics applies computational methods to the study of language, often for applications like machine translation and natural language processing.

Språkforskning aims to understand the universal properties of language as well as the diversity of linguistic expression across different cultures and communities. It provides insights into the nature of human cognition, communication, and culture.
