Spritzer

A spritzer is a beverage made by diluting a base drink with carbonated water or soda water to produce a lighter, effervescent result. In many English-language contexts, it refers most commonly to a white wine spritzer, which mixes white wine with sparkling water to reduce alcohol content while keeping a fizzy texture.

Regional variants are common in Europe. In Austria and parts of Germany, a wine mixed with mineral water is often called a weinschorle or spritzer. Ratios vary, typically ranging from equal parts wine and soda (1:1) to more water than wine (2:1 or 1:2), depending on taste. Red wine spritzers exist but are less common, and fruit juice spritzers use juice with soda for a non-alcoholic version.

Ingredients and preparation can be simple: chilled white wine combined with chilled carbonated water, poured over ice in a tall glass, sometimes with a lemon or citrus garnish. Variants may use sparkling mineral water or flavored sodas, and may include a splash of lemon or lime juice to brighten the flavor.
