Sponponu

Sponponu is a fictional designation used in fantasy literature and role-playing settings to describe a marsh-dwelling, semi-aquatic creature. There is no single canonical description; different authors present varied details. In general, sponponu are imagined as adaptable, sponge-like animals with buoyant, porous skin.

Most depictions place sponponu at 25 to 40 cm in length, with a rounded body, short limbs, and a broad head. Their skin is soft and porous, enabling water absorption for buoyancy control and camouflage. Color ranges from moss green to sandy brown, depending on habitat.

They inhabit freshwater marshes, swamps, and tidal deltas. Diet typically includes aquatic invertebrates, small fish, seeds, and fruit. Sponponu are usually nocturnal, solitary or living in small family groups, and reproduce through varied means across settings.

In many settings, sponponu are portrayed as gentle, curious creatures that contribute to wetland ecology, aiding in nutrient turnover. Their sponge-like skin is sometimes harvested, or imagined as a source of natural sponges in fictional economies, with sustainability mentioned in modern adaptations.
