Spindelens

Spindelens is a genus of bioluminescent basidiomycete fungi described in 2210 by mycologist L. Kestrel. Endemic to the temperate forests of the fictional planet Valoria, the genus currently includes two species, Spindelens alba and Spindelens cerulea. The name Spindelens combines the spindle-shaped stalk that characterizes the fruit bodies with a conventional genus suffix. Both species are noted for producing a soft green glow in darkness, arising from luciferase-like enzymes in the cap tissue.

Morphologically, Spindelens fruit bodies are small to medium, with slender, cylindrical stipes up to 8 cm tall and caps typically 2–4 cm across. The cap ranges from pale tan to olive and often exhibits a violet tinge in high humidity. Gills are decurrent and closely spaced; the flesh is firm and mildly fragrant. The bioluminescence is most visible at the stipe base and is attenuated in bright light.

Ecology and distribution: Spindelens grows on decaying hardwoods and forest litter in moist microhabitats at elevations of roughly 200–1000 m. It is saprotrophic, contributing to wood decay and nutrient cycling. Spore dispersal is wind-driven, with basidiospores depositing on nearby debris. Conservation status is not listed as threatened in current assessments, though habitat disturbance and climate change could affect populations. In cultural contexts, the glow has inspired local folklore and has been investigated for potential applications in bioimaging.
