Spinal epidural is a medical procedure that involves injecting medication into the epidural space, which is the area surrounding the dura mater, the outermost membrane covering the spinal cord. This space contains loose connective tissue, blood vessels, and nerves. The primary purpose of a spinal epidural is to provide pain relief or anesthesia.

The medication injected is typically a local anesthetic, often combined with opioids or other agents, depending on the desired effect and duration. Local anesthetics block nerve signals in the targeted area, leading to numbness and a reduction in pain. Opioids can further enhance pain relief by acting on pain receptors in the central nervous system.

Spinal epidurals are commonly used during surgical procedures, especially those involving the lower body, such as orthopedic surgery of the legs or abdomen. They are also frequently employed in obstetrics to manage labor pain, often referred to as an epidural for childbirth. In some cases, continuous epidural infusions are used for post-operative pain management.

The procedure is performed by an anesthesiologist or other trained medical professional. It involves sterilizing the skin and then inserting a needle into the epidural space, usually in the lower or mid-back. Once the needle is in place, a thin catheter may be threaded through it to allow for continuous administration of medication. The needle is then removed, leaving the catheter in place.

Potential side effects can include a drop in blood pressure, headache, itching, and temporary nerve irritation. Serious complications are rare but can include infection, bleeding, or nerve damage. The duration and intensity of the anesthetic effect depend on the type and amount of medication used.
