Spieltag

Spieltag is a German term used to denote a round of matches within a sports league, typically held on a specific calendar day or set of days. In most leagues, a Spieltag consists of several games, with all participating teams playing once during that round. After each Spieltag, results are reflected in the league standings, influencing positions, goal difference, and qualification possibilities.

In German football, the term is especially common. The Bundesliga season runs for 34 Spieltage; with 18 teams, this means 9 matches per Spieltag and each club plays 34 times. The schedule is organized by the league and typically features weekend fixtures, with some games on Friday evenings, Saturdays, Sundays, and occasional midweek matches, particularly in congested calendars or when cup competitions are involved. The outcome of each Spieltag shapes the table, determines momentum, and can affect relegation fights and European qualification.

The term is used beyond football as well; other German leagues and sports organizations employ Spieltag to designate rounds of games, such as in handball or basketball leagues. The plural, Spieltage, refers to multiple rounds within a season, and the term is standard in fixtures, match reports, and fan discussions.
