The concept originated in early tabletop RPGs like *Dungeons & Dragons*, where players accumulated points through completing quests, overcoming challenges, or gaining knowledge, which could then be exchanged for character improvements such as increased stats, new abilities, or enhanced equipment.

In most RPGs, XP is awarded in discrete increments, often tied to specific milestones such as defeating enemies, solving puzzles, or achieving narrative goals. The system encourages players to engage with the game’s content strategically, as higher XP totals typically unlock more powerful or versatile character options. Some games introduce alternative methods of earning points, such as social interactions, exploration, or creative problem-solving, reflecting deeper storytelling or thematic elements.

Supporters, however, praise them for providing clear feedback, fostering long-term engagement, and creating a sense of achievement. Variations on the traditional XP model, such as skill trees, level caps, or dynamic progression systems, continue to evolve as game design adapts to player preferences and technological advancements.
