Spektroskoper

Spektroskoper, or spectroscope in English, is an optical instrument used to disperse light into its component wavelengths for qualitative analysis of a light source or a sample. It typically includes a light path, a dispersive element such as a prism or diffraction grating, a slit to control resolution and light throughput, and a viewing device or detector. The instrument allows observers to see the spectrum directly or to record it for later analysis.

Principle and operation: Light enters through a slit, is dispersed by the prism or diffraction grating, and forms a spectrum along a focal axis. By examining the wavelengths present or the intensity of light at different wavelengths, users can identify chemical elements, compounds, or physical processes. In emission setups, light from excited atoms or molecules is analyzed; in absorption setups, light from a source passes through a sample and the absorbed wavelengths are observed as dark lines in the spectrum.

History and evolution: The development of spectral analysis began in the early 19th century with the discovery of spectral lines, notably Fraunhofer lines in solar spectra. Early spectroscopes used prisms or simple gratings, and they evolved through refinements in optical design and illumination. In modern practice, many instruments that retain the term “spectroscope” are integrated with electronic detectors or become part of a broader class of devices known as spectrometers or spectrographs.

Types and relation to other instruments: A spectroscope is primarily a qualitative tool for viewing spectra. Quantitative measurements are performed with spectrometers, which often include detectors and calibrated optics, and with spectrographs that record spectra for later analysis. Handheld and laboratory variants exist, spanning simple educational devices to advanced scientific instruments.

Applications: Spectroscopes are used in astronomy to identify elements in stars, in chemistry and physics for material and reaction analysis, in environmental monitoring, forensics, and education. They remain foundational tools for understanding the light emitted or absorbed by matter.
