Speedbreakers

Speedbreakers, also known as speed bumps, sleeping policemen, or traffic calming cushions, are raised areas on roads designed to slow down vehicular traffic. They are typically constructed from asphalt, concrete, or plastic and are placed across a roadway to force drivers to reduce their speed. The primary purpose of speedbreakers is to enhance safety, particularly in areas where high-speed traffic could pose a risk to pedestrians, cyclists, or other vehicles. They are commonly found in residential areas, school zones, near hospitals, and in parking lots.

The design of speedbreakers can vary in height, width, and shape. Some are simple, rounded humps, while others are more complex, like trapezoidal speed tables which offer a longer, flatter surface at the top. The effectiveness of a speedbreaker depends on its design and placement, as well as driver compliance. While they are intended to improve safety, improperly designed or placed speedbreakers can cause discomfort to occupants, damage vehicles, and even create hazards if struck at excessive speeds. Traffic engineers carefully consider factors such as speed limits, vehicle types, and traffic volume when deciding on the implementation and specifications of speedbreakers.
