Spaced Repetition Systems (SRS) are educational tools designed to optimize learning by presenting information at increasing intervals. The core principle behind SRS is the spacing effect, which suggests that learning is more efficient when study sessions are spaced out over time rather than crammed into a single session. This approach leverages the psychological spacing effect, where information is better retained when it is reviewed at spaced intervals rather than massed together.

SRS typically operates through flashcards, where each card contains a question on one side and the answer on the other. Users review these cards, and the system adjusts the timing of future reviews based on the user's performance. If a user answers a question correctly, the system will schedule the next review further in the future. Conversely, if the answer is incorrect, the system will schedule a review sooner to reinforce the material.

There are several algorithms used in SRS to determine the optimal spacing for reviews. The most well-known is the SuperMemo algorithm, developed by Piotr Wozniak. This algorithm uses a combination of factors, including the user's performance and the difficulty of the material, to calculate the optimal review intervals. Other algorithms, such as the Leitner system and the Anki algorithm, also exist and are used in various SRS applications.

SRS has been widely adopted in educational settings, including language learning, medical education, and general academic studies. It has been shown to improve retention and understanding of material compared to traditional study methods.
