Sourrelating

Sourrelating is a term used to describe the act of comparing one's own negative experiences or feelings to those of another person, often with the intent of downplaying or invalidating the other person's emotions. It involves a form of one-upmanship where the focus shifts from empathy to competition about who has suffered more. This can manifest in various ways, such as responding to someone's personal difficulty with a story of a worse hardship one has faced, or dismissing someone's sadness by pointing out that others have it "worse."

The underlying psychology of sourrelating can stem from a desire to be understood, a need for validation, or an inability to effectively process one's own emotional distress. Instead of offering support, the individual engaging in sourrelating may inadvertently make the other person feel unheard or alone. This behavior can be detrimental to relationships as it erodes trust and prevents genuine emotional connection. It can also be a defense mechanism to avoid confronting one's own vulnerability by focusing on perceived greater misfortunes.

Recognizing sourrelating is the first step towards addressing it.
