Sotobo

Sotobo is a small town located in the Mazabuka District of Zambia’s Southern Province. The town lies approximately 30 kilometres north of the district capital, Mazabuka, and is situated near the southern bank of the Kafue River. Sotobo’s elevation is roughly 1,150 metres above sea level, providing a mild, temperate climate that supports year‑round agricultural activities.

The settlement has a history that dates back to the early 20th century, when it developed as a stop on the railway line that connected the port of Choma to the interior of the country. The establishment of the railway spurred the construction of a small siding, a station building, and facilities for loading agricultural produce. Over time, the rail connection helped integrate Sotobo into regional trade networks and influenced the pattern of local settlement.

According to the latest Zambia National Census, Sotobo has an estimated population of around 4,500 residents. The demographic profile is dominated by the Tonga ethnic group, though the town also hosts communities of Lozi, Nyanja, and other local minorities. The population is predominantly young, with a median age near 22 years, and a household size that reflects extended family structures common in rural Zambia.

The town’s economy is primarily agriculture‑based. Major crops include maize, millet, and groundnut, with small‑scale farming dominating the landscape. Livestock keeping, especially cattle and poultry, provides both subsistence and a source of income. In recent years, artisanal fishing along the Kafue River and small-scale handicraft production have added to the diversification of local livelihoods. Commercial activity is limited to a handful of market stalls, a bakery, and basic retail shops that serve the needs of the community.

Education in Sotobo is centred on a primary school established in the 1970s, which serves children up to the eleventh grade. Secondary education is accessed in the nearby town of Mazabuka, requiring students to commute daily. Public health services are provided by a clinic that operates on a rotating schedule of medical staff and offers basic care, vaccinations, and maternal health support. The town’s infrastructure includes a modest road network connecting it to key nearby towns, as well as a water supply system derived from river management initiatives.
