Sorcserék

Sorcserék is a Hungarian-language term used in contemporary fantasy to refer to practitioners of magic, akin to sorcerers or wizards in English-language fiction. The word is a modern neologism rather than a traditional label in Hungarian folklore. In most works where it appears, sorcserék are depicted as students or masters of arcane arts who study ancient grimoires, manipulate energies, and cast spells. They may belong to schools, guilds, or covens, and their ethics range from scholarly and benevolent to morally ambiguous or antagonistic.

In contrast to boszorkányok (witches) and mágusok (mages), sorcserék are often portrayed as a more formalized or technical subset of magic users, emphasizing training, technique, and codified theory rather than mere folk magic. The term has gained traction through Hungarian fantasy literature, role-playing games, and fan media, where authors tailor its meaning to fit their fictional worlds.

Because sorcserék is not tightly fixed in any single canon, its exact characteristics vary by work. It serves as a flexible label for magic-using characters within Hungarian-language fantasy.
