Sopprosessit refers to the processes undertaken by fungi. These processes are fundamental to the life cycle and ecological roles of fungi. Key among these are nutrient acquisition, reproduction, and decomposition. Fungi are heterotrophic, meaning they cannot produce their own food. They obtain nutrients by secreting enzymes into their environment that break down organic matter, which they then absorb. This external digestion is a defining characteristic of fungal feeding.

Decomposition is arguably the most significant ecological role of fungi. They are primary decomposers of dead organic material, particularly complex carbohydrates like cellulose and lignin found in plants. This process is vital for nutrient cycling in ecosystems, returning essential elements to the soil that can then be utilized by other organisms, including plants. Mycorrhizal fungi, which form symbiotic relationships with plant roots, also play a critical role in nutrient uptake for plants. Other processes include fermentation, used in food production, and pathogenesis, where some fungi cause disease in plants and animals.
