Sonderaktion is a German term meaning “special operation” or “special action.” It denotes a planned, often urgent or extraordinary mission carried out by a government body, military, police, or security service. The label is typically applied to operations that depart from ordinary procedures, frequently with a specific codename, schedule, or limited scope.

Etymology and usage: The word combines sonder- (special) with aktion (action/operation). In everyday German it appears in various contexts such as Sonderzug (special train) or Sonderurlaub (special leave). When paired as Sonderaktion, it signals a targeted, exceptional effort, sometimes secretive or coercive, depending on the context.

Historical context: In Nazi Germany, Sonderaktionen were used as codename labels for extraordinary or covert measures. A well-known instance is Sonderaktion 1005, conducted during 1942–1944 to erase evidence of mass murder by exhuming bodies and burning remains.
