Some200

Some200 is a digital rights management (DRM) system implemented by Sony BMG for its audio CDs. It was introduced in the early 2000s and was used to prevent unauthorized copying of music from CDs to computers. The system worked by installing software on users' computers when they inserted a CD into their CD-ROM drive.

Upon installation, the software began to run in the background and was embedded in the Windows operating system. The software then monitored the user's computer for any attempts to copy copyrighted music. When such attempts were detected, the software would display a warning message and prevent the copying of music. Some200 was designed to protect the intellectual property of music artists and labels by preventing the unauthorized reproduction of their work.

The reception of Some200 was not universally positive, with many users expressing concerns about the system's invasive nature. Several lawsuits were filed against Sony BMG on grounds of data tampering and invasion of privacy. In 2006, Sony BMG agreed to settle the lawsuits by paying a total of $4.75 million to affected users. The incident led to a greater emphasis on consumer awareness and education about digital rights management and the potential risks associated with such systems. As of 2010, Some200 had been discontinued, and its use was no longer supported.
