Softwarewerten is a German term that translates to "software valuation" in English. It refers to the process of determining the economic value of software. This valuation can be undertaken for various purposes, including mergers and acquisitions, licensing agreements, intellectual property disputes, and financial reporting.

The valuation of software is complex because software is an intangible asset. Unlike physical assets, its value is not derived from its material components but from its functionality, performance, marketability, and the intellectual property rights associated with it. For instance, in a sale scenario, marketability and revenue potential are paramount, while in a dispute, proof of ownership and development costs might be more critical.
