Sobrarbe

Sobrarbe is a historical comarca in Aragon, Spain, located in the northeastern part of the province of Huesca. It is characterized by its dramatic mountain landscapes, with the Pyrenees mountains forming its northern border and the Sierra de Guara to the south. The region is known for its significant natural parks, including the Ordesa y Monte Perdido National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site. This park is renowned for its deep canyons, glacial valleys, and diverse flora and fauna, attracting hikers and nature enthusiasts from around the world.

The history of Sobrarbe stretches back to the early Middle Ages. Its name is believed to derive from the Latin "super arborem," meaning "above the tree," possibly referring to a fortress built on a high vantage point. The Kingdom of Sobrarbe was an early Aragonese entity, playing a role in the Reconquista. Over centuries, it was incorporated into the Kingdom of Aragon and later Spain. The comarca retains many castles, Romanesque churches, and ancient villages that bear witness to its rich past.

Economically, Sobrarbe has traditionally relied on agriculture, livestock farming, and forestry.
