Slätrörelser

Slätrörelser is a term used in biomechanics to describe translational, or sliding, movements between articulating surfaces within a joint. These movements occur when one surface glides parallel to another, producing changes in contact area without substantial angular rotation. Slätrörelser complement rotational joint motions and contribute to overall joint congruence, load distribution, and smoothness of movement.

In practice, translational movements are observed in many synovial joints. For example, gliding occurs between carpal bones in the wrist, in the facet joints of the spine, and at various joint interfaces where articular surfaces are shaped to slide over one another. The extent and direction of slätrörelser are influenced by cartilage quality, synovial fluid lubrication, joint shape, and the surrounding ligaments and musculature, which guide and constrain motion while maintaining joint stability.

Assessment of slätrörelser typically involves observational analysis, palpation for end-feel, and instrumental methods such as motion capture, dynamic imaging, or physical examination techniques that probe translational range of motion. Clinically, abnormal translational motion can indicate ligamentous laxity, degenerative changes, or joint stiffness. Conversely, excessive translation may reflect instability.

Management and rehabilitation aim to restore normal gliding motion alongside overall joint function. This often includes manual therapy to promote appropriate joint play, graded mobilization techniques, and exercises that enhance neuromuscular control, strength, and flexibility to support stable translational movements. Slätrörelser are therefore a key consideration in physical therapy, sports science, and orthopedic assessment for understanding and optimizing joint mechanics.
