Slussoperationer, also known as lock operations or lock changes, refer to the process of transitioning a ship between waterways of different water levels, typically through a series of locks in a canal or waterway system. This method is essential for navigating rivers, lakes, and artificial waterways where elevation changes prevent direct passage.

The primary purpose of slussoperationer is to allow vessels to move between bodies of water at different heights without requiring excessive energy or structural modifications. Locks function by temporarily holding a ship in a chamber that can be flooded or drained to match the water level on either side. Once the water levels are equalized, the gates are opened, allowing the vessel to proceed.

In Sweden, the term *slussoperationer* is commonly used, particularly in reference to the country’s extensive canal network, such as the Göta Canal and the Stockholm Archipelago’s numerous locks. These systems were historically crucial for trade and transportation, connecting inland regions to coastal ports. Modern slussoperationer are often automated, improving efficiency and reducing human error.

The operation involves precise coordination between lock operators, who control water flow and gate mechanisms. Environmental considerations, such as water conservation and ecological impact, are increasingly integrated into lock management practices. Some older lock systems may face challenges related to maintenance and aging infrastructure, prompting upgrades or replacements in certain regions.
