Skloviny

Skloviny is a Czech term that translates to "enamel" in English, referring to the hard, white outer layer of teeth. It is the most mineralized substance in the human body, primarily composed of hydroxyapatite crystals. This crystalline structure gives enamel its remarkable hardness, which is crucial for protecting the underlying dentin and pulp from mechanical damage during chewing and from chemical attacks.

Despite its hardness, enamel is somewhat porous and can be eroded by acids produced by bacteria in the mouth. These bacteria feed on sugars and starches from food, and their metabolic byproducts are acidic. Over time, this acid can demineralize the enamel, leading to cavities. Saliva plays a vital role in dental health by neutralizing acids and providing minerals that can help remineralize early stages of enamel erosion.

The formation of enamel, known as amelogenesis, is a complex biological process that occurs during tooth development. It is produced by specialized cells called ameloblasts. Once a tooth has erupted, the enamel cannot regenerate itself, making its preservation essential for long-term oral health. Maintaining good oral hygiene, including regular brushing and flossing, and a balanced diet low in sugary foods and drinks are key to protecting tooth enamel.
