Sisäkuristus

Sisäkuristus, a Finnish term, translates to "internal strangulation" or "inner choking." It describes a physical phenomenon where a person experiences a blockage or constriction within their body that impedes breathing or circulation, not due to external pressure but rather an internal cause. This can manifest in various ways and stem from different medical conditions.

One common cause of sisäkuristus is related to the respiratory system. Swelling of the airways, such as in severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis) or infections like epiglottitis, can lead to a feeling of suffocation. The epiglottis, a flap of cartilage at the base of the tongue, can swell and block the trachea, making it difficult to inhale air. Similarly, a severe asthma attack can cause the bronchioles in the lungs to constrict, leading to shortness of breath and a feeling of internal choking.

Beyond the airways, sisäkuristus can also refer to conditions affecting circulation. For example, a pulmonary embolism, where a blood clot travels to the lungs and blocks an artery, can cause sudden, severe shortness of breath and chest pain, mimicking a sensation of being unable to breathe. In a broader, though less common, interpretation, it might also allude to internal organ compression due to conditions like tumors or severe abdominal distension, which can indirectly affect breathing mechanics. The core concept remains an internal impediment to vital functions.
