Sisätilapaikannus refers to the process of determining the location of an object or person within an indoor environment. Unlike outdoor positioning systems that rely on GPS, indoor environments present unique challenges due to signal obstruction and multipath effects. Various technologies are employed to achieve indoor positioning, each with its own strengths and weaknesses.

Radio-frequency based methods are common. These include Wi-Fi positioning, which uses the signal strength from multiple Wi-Fi access points to triangulate a device's location. Bluetooth beacons, particularly those utilizing Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), are another popular option. These small, low-power devices broadcast signals that can be detected by nearby smartphones, allowing for proximity-based positioning and more granular location tracking. Ultra-wideband (UWB) technology offers high accuracy and is suitable for applications requiring precise tracking of assets or people.

Other indoor positioning techniques involve using magnetic field variations, inertial measurement units (IMUs) found in smartphones (which track movement and orientation), and even computer vision by analyzing camera feeds. The choice of technology often depends on factors such as required accuracy, cost, infrastructure availability, and the specific application, which can range from retail navigation and asset tracking in warehouses to emergency response and augmented reality experiences.
