Sinkers

A sinker is a type of fishing lure designed to descend rapidly through the water column. Its primary function is to take bait or another lure to a specific depth where fish may be present, or to present a lure in a way that mimics natural prey falling to the bottom. Sinkers come in various shapes and weights, allowing anglers to choose the appropriate one for different fishing conditions, such as water depth, current strength, and the target species.

Common materials used for sinkers include lead, tungsten, and steel. Lead has been historically popular due to its density and affordability, but concerns about its environmental impact have led to increased use of alternatives. Tungsten is much denser than lead, allowing for smaller, more compact sinkers that can achieve greater depths with less drag. Steel sinkers are generally less dense than lead and are often used for lighter applications.

Sinkers are employed in a wide range of fishing techniques. Bottom fishing often involves a sinker to anchor bait on the seabed. Trolling, where a lure is pulled through the water behind a moving boat, may use sinkers to get the lure deeper. In some lure designs, the weight is integrated into the lure itself, while in others, a separate sinker is attached to the fishing line above the bait or lure. The choice of sinker is a critical factor in successful angling, influencing presentation and effectiveness.
