Silmäpallojen

Silmäpallojen is a Finnish term that translates to "eyeballs" in English. It refers to the globes of the eyes, the primary organs responsible for vision. These complex structures are housed within the orbital cavities of the skull and play a crucial role in how humans and many other animals perceive their surroundings.

The eyeball is a spherical organ consisting of several layers and internal components. The outermost layer is the sclera, commonly known as the white of the eye, which provides structural support. The front of the sclera is covered by the transparent cornea, which bends light entering the eye. Inside the cornea is the iris, the colored part of the eye, which controls the size of the pupil, the opening that regulates the amount of light reaching the retina. Behind the iris is the lens, which further focuses light onto the retina. The retina, located at the back of the eyeball, contains photoreceptor cells (rods and cones) that convert light into electrical signals. These signals are then transmitted to the brain via the optic nerve, where they are interpreted as images. The fluid-filled spaces within the eyeball, the aqueous and vitreous humors, maintain its shape and provide nourishment. The proper functioning of all these components is essential for clear vision.
