Silmänkirurgia, often referred to as ophthalmic surgery, encompasses a wide range of surgical procedures performed on the eye and its adnexa. These procedures aim to diagnose, treat, or improve vision and eye health conditions. Common procedures include cataract surgery, where the clouded lens of the eye is replaced with an artificial intraocular lens, and refractive surgery, such as LASIK and PRK, which reshapes the cornea to correct refractive errors like myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism.

Glaucoma surgery is performed to lower intraocular pressure, which can damage the optic nerve. Procedures like trabeculectomy or the implantation of glaucoma drainage devices are utilized. Retinal surgery addresses conditions affecting the retina, the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye. This can include surgery for retinal detachment, macular holes, or diabetic retinopathy, often involving techniques like vitrectomy.

Eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, addresses issues with the eyelids, such as drooping eyelids (ptosis) or excess skin, improving both function and aesthetics. Corneal transplantation, also known as keratoplasty, replaces a damaged cornea with healthy donor tissue to restore vision. Oculoplastic surgery deals with the reconstruction and cosmetic enhancement of the eye area, including the orbits, eyelids, and lacrimal system.

The decision to undergo eye surgery is typically made in consultation with an ophthalmologist who will assess the patient's condition, discuss the risks and benefits, and determine the most appropriate surgical approach. Advances in surgical technology, including lasers and minimally invasive techniques, have significantly improved outcomes and recovery times for many ophthalmic procedures.
