Silmälihaksille

Silmälihaksille refers to the muscles of the eye in Finnish. The human eye is controlled by a complex system of six extrinsic muscles, also known as extraocular muscles, and intrinsic muscles within the eye itself. The extrinsic muscles are responsible for moving the eyeball in various directions. These include the four rectus muscles (superior, inferior, medial, and lateral) and the two oblique muscles (superior and inferior). Together, they allow for smooth and coordinated movements of the eyes, enabling us to track objects, focus, and maintain binocular vision. The intrinsic muscles, the iris sphincter and dilator muscles, control the size of the pupil, regulating the amount of light entering the eye and thus affecting vision clarity in different lighting conditions.

Disorders affecting the silmälihaksille can lead to a range of visual impairments. Strabismus, commonly known as crossed eyes or wall-eyes, occurs when the muscles are not working in unison, causing one eye to turn in or out. This can result in double vision or suppression of vision in one eye. Eye muscle fatigue, often experienced after prolonged visual tasks, can cause discomfort, headaches, and blurred vision. Certain neurological conditions can also impact the function of the silmälihaksille, leading to difficulties with eye movement and coordination. Treatment for these conditions often involves vision therapy, corrective lenses, or in some cases, surgery to realign the eye muscles. Maintaining good eye health involves regular breaks during visually demanding activities and seeking professional eye care if any concerns arise.
