Silmäkivistystä, or ophthalmolithiasis, is a rare condition characterized by the presence of small, calcified concretions within the conjunctiva or cornea of the eye. These deposits are typically white or yellowish in appearance and can vary in size. The exact cause of silmäkivistystä is not fully understood, but it is often associated with chronic ocular surface inflammation, such as from dry eye syndrome, prolonged exposure to irritants, or certain underlying medical conditions. In some cases, it may be idiopathic, meaning it occurs without a clear cause.

Symptoms can range from mild to absent. When present, they may include a foreign body sensation, irritation, redness, and excessive tearing. In more severe instances, the concretions might cause visual disturbances if they are located on the cornea and interfere with light transmission. Diagnosis is usually made during a routine eye examination with the aid of a slit lamp microscope, which allows for detailed visualization of the ocular surface.

Treatment for silmäkivistystä is generally conservative and aims to alleviate symptoms and prevent complications. Mild cases may not require any intervention. If the concretions cause discomfort or irritation, they can be carefully removed by an eye care professional using specialized instruments. Lubricating eye drops or ointments may be prescribed to soothe the ocular surface and reduce friction.
