Silikonoljer

Silikonoljer are a family of synthetic fluids based on polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and related siloxane structures. They are designed to remain liquid over a wide temperature range and to provide lubricating, dielectric, and inert properties for a variety of industrial and consumer applications. The fluids are typically clear, odorless, and highly chemically stable, with very low reactivity toward most common materials.

Chemically, silokonoljer consist of a silicon-oxygen backbone with organic groups, usually methyl, attached to silicon atoms. They can be linear polymers or cyclic structures, and their viscosity can span several orders of magnitude, from around 1 centistoke to thousands of centistokes or higher. They are generally immiscible with water and exhibit low surface tension and low volatility, especially at higher viscosities. They also display excellent thermal stability and good dielectric properties, making them suitable as lubricants, heat transfer media, and protective fluids in sensitive electronic and mechanical systems.

Common applications include lubrication of bearings and gears, hydraulic fluids, vacuum and aerospace lubricants, heat transfer fluids, and as carrier fluids in cosmetics and personal care products. They are also used as coatings, dampening media, and in medical devices where inertness is important. Selection of a specific grade depends on viscosity, temperature range, and compatibility with materials in contact with the oil.

Safety and environmental notes: silokonoljer are generally low in acute toxicity and widely considered biocompatible, but handling should follow standard industrial hygiene. They persist in the environment and may require containment and recovery in spill situations. Compatibility with elastomers, plastics, and seals should be verified for each application.
