Silikonipäiset

Silikonipäiset, commonly known as silicone-based breast implants, are prosthetic devices used in cosmetic and reconstructive surgery to enhance or restore the shape and size of the breasts. These implants are filled with a gel-like substance composed primarily of polydimethylsiloxane, a type of silicone polymer, which gives them their name. Silikonipäiset are widely used in Finland and other countries where silicone implants are preferred over saline-filled alternatives.

The use of silicone implants dates back to the mid-20th century, with the first modern silicone breast implants introduced in the 1960s. In Finland, silicone implants gained significant popularity in the 1980s and 1990s, becoming a common choice for women seeking breast augmentation or reconstruction after mastectomy. The popularity stems from the natural feel and appearance of silicone gel compared to saline implants, which can feel less realistic.

Silikonipäiset come in various shapes, sizes, and gel consistencies, including cohesive gel (often referred to as "gummy bear" implants due to their firm texture) and highly cohesive gel, which is designed to minimize leakage and maintain shape. The choice of implant type depends on individual patient preferences, surgical goals, and medical advice.

Like all medical implants, silicone breast implants carry potential risks and complications, including capsular contracture (hardening of the scar tissue around the implant), rupture, infection, and changes in breast tissue sensation. Regular medical follow-ups and imaging studies, such as MRI scans, are recommended to monitor implant integrity. In Finland, the use of silicone implants is regulated by the Finnish Medicines Agency (Fimea), ensuring compliance with safety and quality standards.
