Sikiöseulonnat, often translated as fetal screening or prenatal screening, refers to a range of medical tests performed during pregnancy to assess the health and development of the fetus. These screenings aim to identify potential chromosomal abnormalities, birth defects, and other conditions that might affect the baby. They are not diagnostic tests in themselves but rather identify pregnancies that have a higher risk of certain conditions, warranting further investigation with diagnostic tests.

Commonly offered fetal screenings include first-trimester screening, which typically involves a blood test and an ultrasound measurement (nuchal translucency), and second-trimester screening, often called the quadruple screen, which analyzes maternal blood for specific markers. Non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT) is another widely used screening method that analyzes fetal DNA fragments found in the mother's blood. Ultrasounds also play a crucial role in screening, providing visual information about fetal anatomy and growth.

The decision to undergo fetal screening is a personal one for expectant parents.
