SikhMughal is a term used in historical discourse to describe the relationship between the Sikh community and the Mughal Empire from the 16th to the 18th centuries. It denotes both cooperation and conflict as Sikhism emerged in Punjab within the larger Mughal milieu and interacted with imperial authorities, courts, and policy.

Origins and context: Sikhism began in the Punjab region in the late 15th century, during a period of evolving Mughal governance. Early Sikh Gurus maintained relations with Mughal officials, while the community grew amid shifts in imperial policy.

Key episodes: The Mughal era saw significant tensions. In 1606, Guru Arjan was executed in Delhi by orders of Jahangir, an event that spurred Sikh militancy and a collective memory of persecution. In 1675, Guru Tegh Bahadur was martyred in Delhi under Aurangzeb, reinforcing a stance of religious defense. The founding of the Khalsa in 1699 under Guru Gobind Singh formalized a distinct military-socio-religious community and intensified confrontations with Mughal forces. By the early 18th century, Mughal authority in Punjab weakened amid uprisings and regional competition, setting the stage for independent Sikh polities.

Legacy: The eventual decline of central Mughal power coincided with the rise of Sikh leadership and, later, the Sikh Empire under Maharaja Ranjit Singh in the early 19th century. In scholarship, SikhMughal studies examine religious ideology, material culture, military encounters, and administrative interactions between Sikh communities and Mughal authorities.
