Siirtovuorena

Siirtovuorena is a Finnish term used to describe serving in a rotating substitute role or in a duty that is taken on temporarily as part of a schedule. It is commonly encountered in organizational contexts where tasks and responsibilities rotate among people, such as work shifts, on-call arrangements, or sports team lineups.

Etymology and sense. The word derives from siirto or transfer/shift and vuoro, meaning a turn or shift, with the essive suffix -na that marks a temporary role or state. In this use, siirtovuorena conveys “in the capacity of a substitute during a rotation” rather than a permanent position.

Usage and context. In practice, siirtovuorena describes someone who acts as a stand-in when a colleague is unavailable, or who occupies a rotating position within a team or organization. For example, “Hän toimii siirtovuorena sairaalassa, kun kollega on poissa” (He serves as a substitute in the hospital when a colleague is absent). In sports or event management, a person may be designated siirtovuorena to cover for another participant who cannot attend.
