Signaltimed

Signaltimed is an umbrella concept in control systems and communications describing an approach where system actions are scheduled and triggered by explicit time signals rather than solely by state changes or asynchronous messages. The aim is to improve predictability, coordination, and throughput in distributed operations by ensuring that events occur at known times according to a shared clock.

Core concepts of signaltimed include precise clock synchronization across nodes, often using time protocols such as precision time protocol (PTP) or high-accuracy NTP, time-stamped signaling messages, and deterministic processing paths that respect defined deadlines. A signaltimed design specifies timing constraints such as start times, end times, and allowable jitter, and uses signaling channels to propagate these constraints through the system. The approach emphasizes end-to-end timing guarantees and often requires a bounded communication latency.

Applications of signaltimed span several domains. In industrial automation, signaltimed coordination aligns robotic actuators with sensors to improve throughput and safety.
