Siedätyshoitoja, also known as immunotherapy or desensitization therapy, is a medical treatment aimed at reducing an individual's allergic response to specific allergens. This treatment involves gradually exposing the patient to increasing doses of the allergen under medical supervision. The goal is to retrain the immune system to tolerate the allergen, thereby minimizing or eliminating allergic symptoms such as sneezing, itching, hives, or even anaphylaxis.

There are two primary forms of siedätyshoitoja: subcutaneous immunotherapy (SCIT) and sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT). SLIT involves placing liquid or tablet forms of the allergen under the tongue, where they are absorbed. SLIT can often be administered at home after initial doses are given in a clinic.

Siedätyshoitoja is most commonly used for allergies to environmental triggers like pollen, dust mites, and animal dander, as well as for insect venom allergies. It is generally considered a safe and effective long-term treatment option for many individuals with moderate to severe allergies that are not well-controlled by medication alone. The treatment typically lasts for several years, and its effectiveness can vary depending on the individual and the specific allergen. Potential side effects can include localized reactions at the injection or administration site, and in rare cases, more systemic allergic reactions. Medical professionals carefully monitor patients during the treatment process to manage any adverse reactions.
