Shymbulak

Shymbulak, officially Shymbulak Ski Resort, is a major winter sports destination in Kazakhstan. It is located in the Zailiysky Alatau mountains, in the Medeu valley just east of Almaty. The resort sits at high elevations above the city and is accessible by road from Almaty as well as by cable car and gondola systems originating in the Medeu area. It is widely regarded as the largest and most developed ski area in Central Asia.

Facilities and terrain: The resort operates a network of lifts, including a high-speed gondola known as the Golden Eagle, which connects the base area with higher slopes. Shymbulak offers a variety of pistes for beginners, intermediate, and advanced skiers, as well as a snow park for freestyle riding. Visitors can find ski schools, rental shops, and on-site accommodation, along with restaurants and other amenities. Snowmaking is used to extend the season in less snowy years.

History: The area has hosted winter sports since the Soviet era, and the current Shymbulak resort underwent significant modernization in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. Upgrades to lifts, safety systems, and hospitality infrastructure were implemented to attract local and international visitors and to support events.

Seasonality and activities: The resort operates primarily in winter, roughly December through March, with additional summer activities such as hiking and mountain biking in suitable weather. Shymbulak remains a cornerstone of Kazakhstan’s winter tourism and a gateway for visitors to the Almaty region.
