ShuntSysteme, or shunt systems in English, are specialized medical devices primarily used to treat hydrocephalus. Hydrocephalus is a condition characterized by an excessive accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) within the ventricles of the brain, which can increase intracranial pressure and cause brain damage. A shunt system works by diverting the excess fluid from the brain to another part of the body where it can be reabsorbed into the bloodstream.

The device is a flexible tubing system typically made from silicone. It consists of three main components: a proximal catheter, a valve, and a distal catheter. The proximal catheter is inserted into a ventricle in the brain. The attached valve regulates the flow and direction of the CSF, often designed to open only when pressure exceeds a specific level. The distal catheter then channels the fluid to an alternative absorption site, most commonly the peritoneal cavity in the abdomen.

The implantation of a shunt system is a neurosurgical procedure. While shunts are life-saving, they are mechanical devices and can be prone to complications. These include mechanical failure, infection, or obstruction, which may require further surgery to revise or replace the system. The management of a patient with a shunt often involves long-term monitoring by a neurosurgeon to ensure its continued proper function.
